Fact sheet: steps in the observation of a landscape

FEEDBACK ABOUT THE FIELD WORK: HOW TO PROCEED ?

1. If existing, go to elevated points to get a global view on the studied area and check if the tracks identified during the map reading are relevant.

2. Make a first global description of the landscape organization from the elevated points. Start by the encompassing elements (geomorphology – landscape units, houses distribution, cultivate/non cultivated areas) before focusing on the details (one tractor here, a herd of cows there) … or inversely!

3. Go through the transect and achieve close-up observations => elements and people to discover

• Choose the most interesting stations in terms of diversity. For each of them, describe all the elements, draw sketch, try to establish links between the elements: topography - soils - water-houses location- agricultural practices for example
• If by chance you meet a farmer in the field, do not hesitate to ask him/her about his/her appreciation of the landscape (toponymy, criteria of evaluation).
